DESCRIPTION:The President鈥檚 Council on Transforming Lives in partnership with Wabanaki REACH will host the showing of the Award winning Documentary 鈥淒awnland\,鈥� A Documentary About Cultural Survival and Stolen Children 鈥� The Story of the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The documentary film screening will take place as a hybrid event on Tuesday\, April 14th 11:00am 鈥� 1:00pm. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. \nThis event will be primarily hosted in the Farber Forum\, Jewett Hall\, UMA Augusta Campus. Light refreshments will be served. \nThe UMA Rockland Center and the UMA Brunswick Center will also have in-person viewing rooms for anyone to join. \nAttendees may also join remotely via Zoom. \nThis event is open to all UMA students\, staff\, faculty\, and the general public. All are welcome. \n\n鈥淚n Maine\, a historic investigation鈥攖he first government-sanctioned truth and reconciliation commission in the United States鈥攂egins a bold journey. For over two years\, Native and non-Native commissioners travel across Maine. They gather testimony and bear witness to the devastating impact of the state鈥檚 child welfare practices on families in Maliseet\, Micmac\, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal communities. Collectively\, these tribes make up the Wabanaki people.鈥� 鈥� Adam Mazo / Ben Pender-Cudlip\, filmmakers \nDawnland follows the TRC to contemporary Wabanaki communities to witness intimate\, sacred moments of truth-telling and healing. With exclusive access to this groundbreaking process and never-before-seen footage\, the film reveals the untold narrative of Indigenous child removal in the United States. \nA discussion will follow the film and will include Esther Anne\, Passamaquoddy\, and Penthea Burns\, non-Native. Both are among the founders of the truth commission and Wabanaki REACH. 鈥淚f we can work together in that good way [for the truth commission]\, in a system of mutual respect\, to work for our children\, then I think we can work together in anything because nothing is more sacred than our children.鈥� 鈥� Esther Anne\, founder\, Wabanaki REACH \nView the Dawnland Trailer. \nWabanaki REACH is a non-profit organization that works towards a future when Wabanaki and Maine people join together to acknowledge truth and work collectively toward equity\, healing\, and positive change through our community education programs. DESCRIPTION:Stereotypes and misunderstandings shape how many people see yoga鈥攁nd often convince them it isn鈥檛 for them. I鈥檓 not flexible. It鈥檚 too expensive. I don鈥檛 have time. These familiar refrains reflect a narrow\, commercialized image of yoga built on polished photos\, perfectionism\, and consumer culture. \nBut yoga is far more expansive鈥攁nd far more accessible鈥攖han that.\nJoin Sarah Hentges\, PhD\, E-RYT 500\, professor at the 天美传媒 and author of Demystifying American Yoga: Embodied Movement for Individual and Collective Transformation\, for a dynamic and engaging presentation that challenges common myths and explores yoga as a practice of embodied awareness\, personal agency\, and collective transformation. \nDrawing on her scholarship\, teaching\, and experience as a studio founder\, Sarah invites participants to reconsider what yoga is\, who it鈥檚 for\, and how it can serve as a practical tool for navigating everyday life.
