DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special presentation from Visiting Scholar\, Y谋ld谋z A艧ar (University of Bamberg\, Germany). \nAngry Girls on a Fiery Planet?: Girlhood and Environmental Crisis in Recent YA (Eco)Dystopias \nFriday\, April 10\, from 1:30-3:30\nUMA Bangor Campus\, Lewiston Hall 119\nEmail sarah.hentges@maine.edu for the Zoom link \n\nIn June 2025\, President Trump commented on the detention of 22-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg during her humanitarian mission to Gaza\, referring to her as 鈥渁 strange [鈥 young angry person鈥� (Rasdien). In response\, Greta asserted\, 鈥淚 think the world needs many more young angry women [鈥.That鈥檚 the thing we need the most of鈥� (Giordano). Later\, in an interview in September 2025\, Greta explained her commitment to deliver aid to Gaza\, stating\, 鈥渨e cannot pretend to care about the climate crisis while we ignore the suffering and oppression of people today. [鈥 If we only care about our white children鈥檚 future\, [鈥 that is not caring about justice鈥� (Andrieu). By drawing connections between ongoing global conflicts and the climate crisis\, Greta highlights a nuanced ecofeminist perspective on the interconnectedness of social\, political\, and environmental issues and injustices while advocating for the transformative agency of 鈥測oung angry women鈥� in challenging these. \nSimilarly\, this talk will explore the fictional representations of young angry 鈥榞irls鈥� in contemporary American speculative novels. Following the publication of Octavia Butler鈥檚 Parable series (1993-1999) and Suzanne Collins鈥� The Hunger Games trilogy (2008-2010)\, an ever-growing body of novels 鈥� often manifesting as YA (eco)dystopias 鈥� demonstrates a strong narrative preoccupation with young adult girl protagonists. Furthermore\, these narratives intertwine girlhood coming-of-age with large-scale ecological disruption\, imagining vulnerable yet empowered protagonists who must navigate survival while growing up amid environmental crises of apocalyptic proportions. I argue that these novels tap into traditional understandings of American girlhoods and nature\, and envision a new ecofeminist heroine for the twenty-first century: a multiply marginalized girl who embodies both collective anxieties and hopes around survival\, resistance\, healing\, and the possibility of a better future in a devastated nonhuman environment. \nFocusing on Rebecca Roanhorse鈥檚 Indigenous futuristic Sixth World series (2017-2019)\, my discussion will bring together contemporary ecocritical\, ecofeminist\, and girlhood studies perspectives to make visible the emerging cultural connections between girlhood and the nonhuman environment in contexts of ecological risk\, crisis\, and resilience as shaped by recent YA (eco)dystopias.

DESCRIPTION:The President鈥檚 Council on Transforming Lives in partnership with Wabanaki REACH will host the showing of the Award winning Documentary 鈥淒awnland\,鈥� A Documentary About Cultural Survival and Stolen Children 鈥� The Story of the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The documentary film screening will take place as a hybrid event on Tuesday\, April 14th 11:00am 鈥� 1:00pm. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. \nThis event will be primarily hosted in the Farber Forum\, Jewett Hall\, UMA Augusta Campus. Light refreshments will be served. \nThe UMA Rockland Center and the UMA Brunswick Center will also have in-person viewing rooms for anyone to join. \nAttendees may also join remotely via Zoom. \nThis event is open to all UMA students\, staff\, faculty\, and the general public. All are welcome. \n\n鈥淚n Maine\, a historic investigation鈥攖he first government-sanctioned truth and reconciliation commission in the United States鈥攂egins a bold journey. For over two years\, Native and non-Native commissioners travel across Maine. They gather testimony and bear witness to the devastating impact of the state鈥檚 child welfare practices on families in Maliseet\, Micmac\, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal communities. Collectively\, these tribes make up the Wabanaki people.鈥� 鈥� Adam Mazo / Ben Pender-Cudlip\, filmmakers \nDawnland follows the TRC to contemporary Wabanaki communities to witness intimate\, sacred moments of truth-telling and healing. With exclusive access to this groundbreaking process and never-before-seen footage\, the film reveals the untold narrative of Indigenous child removal in the United States. \nA discussion will follow the film and will include Esther Anne\, Passamaquoddy\, and Penthea Burns\, non-Native.
