What happens when you mix six decades of UMA history, a room full of powerhouse faculty musicians, vintage archive photos, jazzy energy, contemporary classical flair, and post-concert snacks?

You get a celebration that refuses to sit quietly in the background.

This special 60th Anniversary concert takes you on a musical journey from the 1960s to today, pairing live performances with a multimedia look at the moments that shaped the University along the way. Expect an energetic, feel-good program that blends story, sound, visuals, and a little bit of sonic adventure.

Dr. Anita Jerosch was selected to sit on a panel of international judges at the International Women’s Brass Conference bass trombone audition competitions for orchestra in Hartford, CT in May. This international competition was open to all ages, and genders.

A new work by 天美传媒 adjunct faculty member Al Kryszak will have its world premiere in New York City. 鈥淪uite for Solo Cimbalom,鈥� a selection from Kryszak鈥檚 鈥淣辞蝉蹿别谤补迟耻鈥� concerto and film score, will be performed by Mat臎j 膶铆p, a rising cimbalom virtuoso from Hodslavice, Czech Republic.

The cimbalom is a hammered, stringed instrument known for its resonant, shimmering tone and remarkable expressiveness. Popular in Eastern European folk and classical traditions, it is rarely featured in solo contemporary works, making this premiere especially distinctive.

Kryszak鈥檚 celebrated career includes premieres at Turner Classic Movies, Symphony Space and The Film Society of Lincoln Center. Known for blending music and film, his work often bridges silent cinema and modern classical soundscapes. This latest suite follows 膶铆p鈥檚 acclaimed 2024 Boston performance of Kryszak鈥檚 full 鈥淐imbalom Concerto鈥� with the New England Film Orchestra. Learn more about his music, art and career at .

The performance will take place Friday, May 2, at 6 p.m. at Bohemian National Hall at the Czech Center in New York City.

Join us for an evening of art, music and inspiration at Art & Music Night, a special fundraising event in support of student scholarships. The event will take place Thursday, April 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Jewett Hall on the UMA Augusta campus, at 46 University Drive.

Art & Music Night will feature a student art exhibition, a reception with a cash bar at the Danforth Art Gallery and live music performances by 鲍惭础鈥檚 esteemed music faculty, including Lindsey Wiehl, Duane Edwards, Christine Letcher, Anita Jerosch and Jeffrey Rojo.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and encouraged, with all funds raised supporting scholarships for UMA art and music students.

Dr. Lindsey Wiehl, assistant professor of music at the 天美传媒, has been named one of 20 Outstanding Women of 2025 by local radio station Coast 93.1. Celebrated for her deep commitment to community enrichment through the arts and education, Wiehl鈥檚 work spans far beyond the classroom.

She has led music and STEM-based projects at summer camps,music lessons at the International Music Camp, and has developed programs that provide students with instruments and opportunities to create and share their music. Through her entrepreneurship venture, Reeding Rainbow Reeds, she blends creativity with accessibility鈥攅nsuring that music remains inclusive, engaging and available to all.

At UMA, Wiehl teaches music production, songwriting, and woodwind techniques, and she mentors students through innovative programs in creating and presenting music to larger audiences, which explores the intersection of sound and technology. Wiehl also creates immersive multimedia concert experiences鈥攍ike Music Based on Literature and Beatlemania Bassoonmania鈥攖hat invite new audiences into the world of music.

As a performer and composer, Wiehl appears locally and internationally, and she is one half of, the electro-synth band she co-founded with her sister Valerie. Their AVA Digital Platinum Award-winning music video, recorded and produced by UMA Senior Events & Learning Production Specialist Rick Burns, captures their signature blend of EDM energy and scientific curiosity.

A classically trained bassoonist, she鈥檚 equally at home in academic, classical and contemporary settings. 鈥淚 believe the brainy and complex side of music can鈥攁nd should鈥攃oexist with the fun and approachable side,鈥� Wiehl says.

UMA’s Internet Radio Station will be featuring the works of and their science themed Electronic Dance Music. Lab Brats are comprised of two sisters, Lindsey and Valerie Wiehl. Join UMA Libraries and UMA’s Music Department for a free film screening of the PBS Independent Lens documentary, “WE WANT THE FUNK!” The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Anita Jerosch, Associate Professor of Music, Dr. Lindsey Wiehl, Assistant Professor of Music, and Duane Edwards, Instructor of Music.

“WE WANT THE FUNK!” is a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, spanning from African, soul, and early jazz roots, to its rise into the public consciousness. Featuring James Brown’s dynamism, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, transformed girl group Labelle, and Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat, the story also traces funk’s influences on both new wave and hip-hop.

Senior Events and Learning Media Production Specialist Rick Burns has received the 2025 AVA Digital Awards platinum distinction for his exceptional production of the music video 鈥淵ou Will Carry Me.鈥� This international competition honors creative professionals for excellence in planning, concept, direction, design, and production of digital media.

The award-winning project (watch below) features the musical group performing 鈥�You Will Carry Me,鈥� a song written and performed by Assistant Professor of Music Lindsey Wiehl. Produced as part of 鲍惭础鈥檚 music course which focuses on integrating music with visual storytelling, the video showcases the talents of Maine-based performers, including UMA students. Burns鈥� expert production brought the piece to life, earning national recognition for its artistic and technical excellence.

In his current role, Burns produces videos and facilitates live events, enhancing 鲍惭础鈥檚 dynamic learning environment. He is a 1992 graduate of the New England School of Communications (now part of Husson University) and has been an integral part of UMA since 2001. With a career spanning commercial production, documentaries, promotional materials, and music videos, he continues to elevate 鲍惭础鈥檚 digital presence. 

Throughout his career, Rick has been recognized for his talent. In 1997 he was acknowledged with an Associated Press First Place Feature Award for video journalism. In 2017, Rick won a Videographer Award for the music video, 鈥淢ove Me,鈥� which he wrote, performed and produced. He was the recipient of a Viddy Gold Award for a documentary video about the Augusta Mental Health Institute in 2022, and in 2023, he earned an featuring 鲍惭础鈥檚 aviation program.

鲍惭础鈥檚 music technology program fosters creativity and technical proficiency, providing students and staff opportunities to excel in the evolving digital landscape. Burns鈥� achievement reflects the university鈥檚 commitment to innovation in education and media production.
